THE SECOND NOVEL IN THE “COMPLETELY BARKING MAD” TRILOGY
Starring Barry the ever popular sprout in the head.
Billy Barnes is the world’s most ruthless man. He keeps his granny in a suitcase under his bed and is feeding her piece by piece to The Voodoo Handbag.
Henry Doors is the world’s richest man and his company Necrosoft doesn’t just market computer software, it now sells immortality. All you have to do is sell your soul to science.
Lazlo Woodbine is the world’s greatest 1950s genre private eye. He works only the four locations. An office where clients come to call. A bar where he drinks the drink and talks the toot. An alley where he gets into sticky situations. And a rooftop where he has the final confrontation with the villain. And Laz is on the biggest case of his life. Or will be as soon as the doctor chooses to release him from the straitjacket.
Barry is the world’s most famous Brussels sprout and he lives in Lazlo’s head and he wishes to make it clear that it is not his fault that Lazlo Woodbine is confined to a mental institution. After all, he is only the voice in Lazlo’s head.
Reckoned by many to be the most extraordinary book amongst Robert Rankin’s many extraordinary books, The Dance of the Voodoo Handbag is a dark exploration of the occult which in combination with his unique brand of savage humour, creates a Techno-Gothic masterpiece that will have you laughing and shivering by turns.
The Dance of the Voodoo Handbag can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but for full explanation of the weirdness therein contained, it forms the second instalment of the “Completely Barking Mad” Trilogy in which it is preceded by Sprout Mask Replica, and the series concludes with Waiting for Godalming. (Both available now from ) .

The story begins in an insane asylum, and it is mad all the way through. This novel is a first person account with the author (or someone of the same name) as the main character. It also includes Voodoo gods, a Guardian Sprout (like an angel only vegetable based), and a madman bent on taking over the world. It is the second book in the "Completely Barking Mad" Trilogy, preceded by 'Sprout Mask Replica,' and followed by 'Waiting for Godalming.'
It's hard to pick a genre for this book, let alone summarize the plot, but I'll give both a try. For genre, I'd label it `comic science fantasy.' It's certainly funny. None of the characters comes within shouting distance of `sane,' but it also includes a little light philosophical messing-with-your-head stuff and a few pokes at contemporary culture, which take it a step above pure slapstick. It has some high-tech virtual reality elements (Sci-Fi), as well as supernatural entities (fantasy). The plot, such as one exists, centers around an insane fellow who adopts different personalities to suit the occasion (and has a voice in his head named Barry) trying to stop a less obvious but far more dangerous lunatic from subjugating humanity -- or something like that. This is Rankin. It's not really supposed to make a lot of sense.
What it lacks in plot and character development, it compensates for with pure zany antics, complete with a classic cartoon scene climax with a dropping piano and dynamite in the trousers. It reminded me of the movie, 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.' Yeah, it's juvenile, but it's funny!
I'll recommend this book simply because it's fun, and fun is good.

The Dance of the Voodoo Handbag Completely Barking Mad Trilogy Book 2 edition by Robert Rankin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is simply genius. (full stop - end of argument)
It's hard to believe that Robert Rankin's books are so difficult to obtain on these shores for my money, Rankin is, hands down, one of the funniest, most visionary authors writing in any genre. His style is loose and playful and, on the onset, seemingly completely at odds with the purpose of constructing a coherent narrative. Laugh-out-loud moments abound however, drawing the slack-jwed reader deep into a web of outrageous characters and even more outrageous situations. An absolutely stunning achievement! I wish I could have amnesia so I could read this book again for the first time!
Rankin once again has a weirdly catchy title to fit an even weirder book.
For a taste of what technology can do in the wrong hands that is frighteningly feasible...
And a further helping of sprouts (one called Barry in particular)...
He's a clever chap, Rankin.
I fell in love with this book. Mr Rankins inventive and at times, ingenious writing had me enthralled. I just loved the cruelty and revenge factors of this book... and its anti- world supremacy outlook. Just wait for the celebrity summoning chapters, in Roberts own bar on the necronet. Fabulous
"The Dance of the Voodoo Handbag" is in the upper tier of books written by Robert Rankin. Rankin's skills for telling the most absurd tall-tales is on display in this book, with many pages providing multiply laugh-out-loud moments.
The plot is centered around the a megalomaniacal media mogul, a concept which is not very far removed from reality, and his attempts at world domination. Our hero of multiple identities pursues the controller of necrosoft (the media) and the voodoo handbag (a bizarre supernatural force), but often finds his pursuit stymied. Thankfully Barry the sprout, that lives inside the hero's head, offers him guidance like an effective guardian sprout. But is Barry's advice enough?
If these concepts seem preposterous, it is because they are. If the ending does not make sense to you, you may have to get in line with the rest of us. Somehow, Rankin ties the together the mayhem of this book to make sense. It is a wildly entertaining ride for those who enjoy Rankin's brand of humor.
Robert Rankin again excells at what he does best tall tales, far-fetched situations and a wit so sharp, you could shave something very hairy with it.
Plus Barry is my favourite creation of his. Get the book, chief!
