Decades of tensions between Cherokee Indians and frontier settlers exploded in the year that marked American independence 1776. As southern colonists prepared to fight Britain, Cherokee warriors stepped up their struggle for sovereignty. In an effort to regain control of native hunting grounds, the Cherokee war leader Dragging Canoe, a staunch British ally, waged guerilla warfare throughout the southern colonies. In retaliation, colonial powers sent 6,000 militiamen into Cherokee country to destroy towns and crops. Based on extensive historical research, A Demand of Blood uncovers for the first time the story of the Cherokees’ war for independence and reveals the struggle at the heart of all humanity the quest for freedom.

A Demand of Blood The Cherokee War of 1776 eBook Nadia Dean Reviews

Ok
A history of the Cherokee nation during the Revolutionary War. Quite informative, can be hard to read in parts but is still very interesting.
Best researched book I have read to date and I am 65. My 5th greatgrandfather went on the Cherokee raids and filed a Rev War pension application. What was said in the application was such a clear picture as stated of the journey in the book. Some of the same tales. My 5th greatgrandfather was also married to a three quarter Cherokee but went on the raids nevertheless. He didn't care for it as most books say about some of the SW Virginians plights. He, at the time, had no idea that Nathaniel Gist was even kin to his wife.
As a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) I appreciate A DEMAND OF BLOOD. Generally other works do not present the Cherokee in the 1776 War involvement from their cultural perspective as succinctly as Dean. This book sheds light on the EBCI’s becoming a separate political entity from the Cherokee Nation. Dean’s research presents a chronology of the 1776 War involving the Cherokee’s struggle to survive and remain independent. Her research reveals the political intrigues surrounding the events and the roles played by the British loyalists and the American rebels. Dean identifies the Cherokee Chiefs who, realizing the futility of resisting the victorious Americans, led in “burying the hatchet”. This review puts into perspective the Cherokee’s inevitable fate of being forced to emigrate West. Her research shows how the small recalcitrant remnant that stayed behind was inspired by Dragging Canoe’s vision of freedom a vision grounded in a spiritual affinity for their land and an inherent right to pursue their way of life. This remnant is the EBCI today. I can’t say enough to express my gratitude to Nadia Dean for this erudite work.
This is the best single reference work about the Cherokee War of 1776 that I have found. It is both detailed and even-handed in its treatment of a genuinely brutal war in which each side was guilty of considerable cruelty. The author's notations regarding modern day highways and towns is really helpful in getting a better picture of the swath of destruction through the Cherokee nation. It is a painful part of our nation's history, but one we should never forget. CRG
This is a must have for any well stocked library. Well foot noted for anyone wanting to see the orginal source. Very interesting has information that I had not seen before. Nadia lays it out so it was easy to skip around the book and it sent me rereading some of my other books on the subject. The book clearly names all the players and their interrelationship on the Southern Frontier dluring the Revolution with references back to the French and Indian War. The relationships between the French, British, white settlers, half breeds and natives is a complicated one , this book will add to your understanding of it. Thanks for a wonderful book.
"A Demand of Blood" by Nadia dean is so well written that any serious student of the American Revolution needs to have a copy of it. The strategic implications of "The Cherokee War of 1776" are enormous." The Declaration of Independence" actually mentions the Crown stirring up the Indians on the frontier as a cause of the revolution. This is that frontier. The extirpation of the Cherokee Nation by Gen. Griffith Rutherford is what gave the "Over the Mountain Men" the confidence to bag Ferguson at Kings Mountain in 1781. Ferguson called these people, "Mongrels." This is part of a chain of events in the South that led to our ultimate victory over Lord Cornwallis and the British. This ultimately gave us our Nation. The Cherokee sued for peace after Rutherford's Campaign and kept to the terms of the Treaties and this allowed the ever Western movement to explode. There is much to enjoy in this riveting tale. This work is fair and impartial to both sides and will give the reader a better understanding of a complicated time in the history of the United States of America.
This book has allowed a very important part of the Revolutionary War to be viewed. When a large tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, it is possible that only the damage that is created would be noted - this does not mean that it was not very important to our Revolutionary War. This books keeps the topic of the Rutherford Campaign from being noted as only a battle where 46 of the 50 villages the Cherokee Indians had were burnt down and the crops destroyed which kept the Indians from being a problem. The numerical destruction has kept this quiet as the white men were unwilling to historically examine the nature and importance of this battle. Personally had a great, great, great grandmother who was orphaned by the Cherokee attacks that proceeded the Rutherford Campaign. The difficulty the Cherokee had encountered and their political struggle within the tribe base upon the settlers having a Revolution is appreciated as the cultural struggle they were forced to contend with as the British government and settlers involved them in the middle of this Revolution. The contribution of the Cherokee it making peace and keeping the peace with the settlers for the balance of the Revolution made them "Patriots". The military significance of this quiet battle has just began to be calculated. We have learned about the Revolution as to how we prepared for it. This book lines up the conduct of this 1776 battle unfolding as the Country was being brought together. North Carolina was a special target for the British in planning their effort to put down the Revolution.
